Financial Woes Causes B.C. Government to Review ICBC

The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC), B.C.’s supplier of universal auto insurance, has recently been suffering financial problems, prompting a review by the local government. Lawyer General David Eby made the announcement in September that a review and a series of short-term changes will be needed to keep basic and optional insurance rates from continuing to increase.

“This is one of the many actions we are taking so that the people of B.C. can have confidence in and continue to benefit from ICBC, one of our most important public assets,” said Eby in a recent press release. Every driver in B.C. is required to have ICBC insurance.

At the law firm of Stephens & Holman, our experienced personal injury lawyers are here to help you if you’ve been in an accident in Vancouver or across B.C. While you must file a claim with ICBC to receive compensation for your injury, we offer our services to help you make sure that the amount of compensation you receive is fair and that your rights are upheld.

Throughout our years of practicing law across 17 locations in B.C, we’ve helped clients who suffered personal injury in:

  • Car accidents
  • Truck accidents
  • Motorcycle accidents
  • Pedestrian accidents
  • Brain injury cases
  • Spinal cord injury cases

These are just a few of the many types of cases we’ve helped people with. Hiring a lawyer will in no way affect your ICBC claim, as it would be illegal and unethical for them to treat your claim differently after seeking counsel. In fact, contacting a skillful personal injury lawyer before making your claim can help your case if you’ve been injured through the negligence of another.

Some of the ways a lawyer can help you if you’ve been in a motor vehicle accident include:

  • Protecting your rights
  • Preserving critical evidence to help your claim
  • Maximizing your recovery
  • Helping you recover compensation even if the accident was partially your fault

In B.C., there is a statute of limitations of two years from the date of the accident to file a claim. That’s why we recommend you contact the lawyers at Stephens & Holman immediately after your accident to ensure that the process gets started. The faster you begin the sooner you can receive the compensation you need to get your life back on track. Our lawyers will also deal directly with the ICBC so you can focus on your recovery if you’ve been injured.

While ICBC may be having financial difficulties and the government is trying to ensure your premiums don’t continue to increase, the fact of the matter is that you still have to have insurance with ICBC. However, if you’ve been in an accident caused by the negligence of someone else anywhere in B.C., our skillful lawyers are here for you.
